Project Proposal

I’m declaring a solo status on this project because my interest in it is highly exhausting, so I’d feel like other members wouldn’t enjoy it as much as myself.

I was going to go down the path of an example like Marble Hornet.   A popular part of Reddit is the sub-Reddit community of “Let’s Not Meet”, along with various other horror stories.  These have been taken and submitted by their original authors, proved as truthful, and then sent to various and famous Youtubers that read their stories for them.  Some stories come in a series, and some can be interactive still, encouraging people to look at their problems or actual court cases that may have been a result of their personal experience.

My set of objectives by looking and listening to these various strings of scary stories based on real accounts can serve so many different purposes:

  1.   People can build an honest community off of trust and similar experiences by finding refuge in the fact that someone else has experienced something tragic or horrific
  2. Unsolved stories or cases could actually pop up over this sub-Reddit quite frequently and the community does their best to console people and solve problems
  3. People are very active in the comment section and frequently write back in forth in a creative environment, all because of a series of scary videos

I really feel like exposing my classmates to these kinds of digital stories can help a lot of things.  It puts out scenarios that have happened to others, so you can potentially avoid them one day.  It creates a safe net of people that care about what actually happens to you, and a lot of great advice is given over the exchange of videos with audio and still clips, links to the Reddit page, and sometimes the actual contact information of an author that might be in trouble with a dangerous situation.

  1. I fully believe folks like yourself can take an “exhausting” approach to horror online: it really brings together two interests – horror and social media – that already spark intense passions in many people. 🙂 You might be interested in my friend Bryan Alexander’s site, Infocult, which has lots of links to interesting conversations about modern horror: http://infocult.typepad.com/

So it seems like your plan is to create a set of videos, similar in style to Marble Hornets? Or are you wanting to study the Reddit community posters and produce some other kind of product? I’m just not entirely clear on what the final product, or what you’ll show us in the showcase, will look like. Would you elaborate a bit please?
